Are you passionate about health equity and committed to creating lasting change in your community? The Health Equity Council (HEC) in Bernalillo County is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors. HEC is part of New Mexico’s network of 41 county and tribal health councils, working to advance community well-being through advocacy, collaboration, and leadership.
About HEC Board Membership
As a member of the Board, you would play a crucial role in guiding our organization and driving our mission forward. Board activities include:
- Tracking community health outcomes.
- Identifying key health equity needs.
- Developing and implementing health action plans.
- Advising policymakers and organizing residents for collective action.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE INTERN
Overview: Join the Health Equity Council’s Public Health Initiative (PHI) team as an Intern! This role is ideal for students or recent grads with a passion for health equity and community-focused solutions. You’ll assist with research, data analysis, and community health needs assessments (CHNAs) to support initiatives that address health disparities in Bernalillo County. This internship requires a total commitment of at least 200 hours.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with research and data analysis on relevant public health issues
- Support the preparation of policy briefs, reports, and presentations.
- Help with data entry, survey analysis, and creating reports.
- Participate in community outreach and engagement activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate program (preferably in Public Health or related) or completed a Bachelor’s degree. Graduate students are welcome to apply.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Interest in health equity and community health.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
- Bernalillo County residents preferred.
This is a remote or hybrid work position, with preference given to residents of Bernalillo County.
A stipend may be available for this position, contingent on available funding.
PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
Overview: HEC is looking for a Public Health Communications Intern to support our outreach and communication efforts. This role is a great fit for students or recent grads interested in public health messaging and digital content creation. This internship requires a total commitment of at least 200 hours.
Responsibilities:
- Help create content for HEC’s website, social media, and newsletters.
- Support communication strategies for events and community health initiatives.
- Conduct research on health topics and assist with writing and design projects.
- Track engagement metrics and contribute to communications reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate program (Public Health, Communications, or related) or completed a Bachelor’s degree. Graduate students are welcome to apply.
- Strong writing skills and a knack for creating engaging content.
- Experience with social media, digital platforms, and basic design tools (e.g., Canva).
- Interest in health equity and effective public health communication.
